GPSMaster

FAQ

Q. Which keys do I use and how do I use the mouse?

  • A list of the keys used is visible in the program under settings on the two tabs 'Keys 1' and 'Keys 2'.
  • Scrolling the mousewheel lets you zoom in/out (keys: Y and U).
  • Holding the left mouse button down and moving the mouse will turn the earth (keys: numeric keypad 8,2,4,6).
  • Holding the right mouse button down will change the camera's (the viewer's) pitch and heading (keys: numeric keypad 7,9,1,3). If you lost your view of earth and it's out of sight press the C ('center') key.

Q. What's up with all those coloured (magenta, red etc.) tiles and rectangles?

  • The colours provide feedback of what's happening.
  • If you see a white rectangular outline it means the image has not yet been loaded from disk, if the rectangular outline is blue it means the image is not yet on your harddisk and needs to be downloaded, it will try to download it a number of times (configurable) and the outline's colour which change from blue (first try) to red (last try). A red rectangular outline therefore means downloading of that particular tile has failed. To try to download it again press the 'Refresh' key (F5) (this resets the number of download tries to zero). If you do see a rectangular image but it's colour is yellow it means GPSMaster.NET is currently creating an elevation profile for it, this normally lasts only a very short time.
  • If you do see a rectangular image but it's colour is blue it means the elevation data (which comes separate from the image) has not yet been downloaded. The elevation data is queued for download. If you do see a rectangular image but it's colour is magenta it means the elevation data is currently being downloaded, the colour goes from dark magenta (start of elevation download) via light magenta (part of elevation data downloaded) to white (all elevation data downloaded). If the download of elevation data for a particular tile is not 100% complete after a number of tries the tile will be displayed in red. Pressing F5 will reset the number of download tries and try to download the missing elevation data again. The availability of tiles depends on the provider of the images, the speed with which you download them depends on your own connection speed, how busy the server is, where the server is located, what time of day it is, how much you've already downloaded in a certain time. Sometimes tiles just can't seem to be downloaded, try again at a later time.

Q. My Garmin Nüvi GPS does not communicate with GPSMaster?

It never will. The Garmin Nüvi GPS does not communicate using the Garmin USB protocol but is instead just seen as a Mass Storage Device, meaning it will show up as an extra disk in Windows Explorer (same as when inserting a USB stick). If there are .gpx files on the drive you can import them into GPSMaster. But you will NOT be able to up/download waypoints/routes/tracks like you would be able to when using a Garmin GPS which DOES support the Garmin USB protocol. So the fact that you can connect your Nüvi to your PC using USB does NOT mean it uses the Garmin USB protocol (like eg the Garmin GPS 60, or eTrex series do)!

Q. Do you have a document describing all the GPSMaster functionality?

Not yet. GPSMaster however is easy to use. Just try. It's very intuitive.
